Do Podiatrists Remove Corns?
Podiatrists are specially trained to care for conditions and diseases of the human foot. When a person has foot pain or a condition such as diabetes that can lead to foot problems, the podiatrist has the expertise to care for the problem. Corns are a common problem of the foot that usually develop on the sole. Anyone can get a corn, but they are most common in people who spend a lot of time on their feet. They appear most frequently in women who wear ill-fitting footwear and in athletes who put a lot of pressure on their feet. If you have a corn, you might wonder, "Do podiatrists remove corns?" The answer to this question is yes!
What Is a Corn?
A corn is a localized thickening of the skin. The buildup of keratin causes a noticeable change in the texture of the foot. This thickening is in response to pressure and is the foot's way of protecting itself from injury. The corn is shaped like a cone, with the pointy end going into the foot. This can make every step painful. When a corn is located in the moist areas between the toes, it is usually soft. Corns on the sole or outer side of the toes are usually hard. Most corns are about the diameter of a pencil eraser.
How do Podiatrists Remove Corns?
A podiatrist can use several techniques to remove a corn. The most common method is to use a surgical blade to shave off the thickened skin. Because these layers of skin are already dead, there is no pain associated with removal of the corn. If the corn extends deep into the foot, an injection of a numbing agent may be made so that the corn can be fully excised. Cortisone injections may also be performed by the podiatrist. This is done to reduce swelling and lessen pain caused by a large corn.
Preventing Corns from Redeveloping
When you have a corn removed by the podiatrist, your podiatrist will educate you on how to prevent getting any new corns. The most important thing to do is to wear appropriately fitting footwear. Your shoes should not squeeze your toes together. You should be able to wiggle your toes inside of your shoes. If your shoes are not well-cushioned, you can get an insole to slide into the shoe. Gel pad inserts can also help.
